Although you will come across a large number of companies offering car hire only eleven actually have branches in the terminal buildings.
These are obviously the easiest and most convenient ones to deal with, as you can collect your luggage and make arrangements to collect your car at the desk directly outside the arrivals halls of both terminals.
If you make a reservation with one of the offsite agencies you will have to catch a minibus to collect your car and another to get back to the terminal building to catch your flight home when you return your car.All of which adds more time and stress on to your journey.
Tips on Driving in Alicante
The first (and most important thing) to remember is to drive on the right hand side of the road.
Unless you drive right off the beaten track the roads in Alicante are very good and well maintained.
On your road map you will see the main roads classified as: Autopista (motorway) with a maximum speed of 120kph: Autovia (dual carriageway).Speed limits from 80 to 140kph.: Carretera Nacional 100 to 60kph: Carretera Comarcal (country roads). 100 to 80kph: Carretera Local (highway). Speeds not usually more than 100kph. Take car when driving in a residential area as the speed limit can be as low a 20kph. If you are towing a trailer/caravan check the speed limits as they will be lower.
It is an easy 9km drive from the airport to the city centre, but if you are staying in Alicante make sure you understand the parking rules and watch out for the no parking signs. Also make sure you do not park anywhere with a yellow kerb.
Parking is also metered in some areas or spaces are marked in blue. You need to buy a ticket to park here from a machine or attendant is present to sell the tickets. Most of these areas have a two hour limit.
If you break the parking laws your car could be towed away and you will find a label on the kerb saying where it has been taken. It is not cheap to get your car back and from personal experience you will probably be dealing with workers who do not speak English.
If you are staying in an apartment or villa then it is more than likely parking is provided.
